Scottish Enterprise again named UK's top investor in university spinouts by number of investments

Chief Executive Adrian Gillespie welcomes the recognition by the Royal Academy of Engineering

Supporting spinout companies has always been a strong element of what we do at Scottish Enterprise and I’m incredibly proud that we continue to be recognised for our unrivalled support for Scottish spinouts as the UK’s number one backer in terms of the number of investments, this time by the Royal Academy of Engineering. We will continue to show how partners in the public and private sectors can work collectively with academia to help turn innovative university research into successful business ventures.

Scotland has a number of commercially active, world-leading universities demonstrating innovation that can help drive economic recovery in key sectors and tackle some of society’s biggest issues.

It is fantastic to see Scottish innovation performing strongly across the different metrics in the report. Scotland has a vibrant and supportive ecosystem for the commercialisation of university spin outs – including commercial investors, business networks, public sector funders, industry bodies, incubators and innovation centres – and across the eco-system we continue to nurture companies as they grow and scale.

Spinouts provide investors with huge opportunities to be at the forefront of pioneering technology and the financial returns that Scottish Enterprise make from our activity in this space allow us to reinvest in our economy.

So we are determined to continue to work with our partners to further scale the level of spinout activity in Scotland, for example through our High Growth Spinout Programme, and to provide support through further investment rounds and wider business growth support in the critical early stages of company formation and growth.
