Ambitious oil & gas companies look far east for new opportunities

A record number of Scotland’s oil & gas companies are heading to Asia this week for the region’s largest oil & gas event.

Scottish Enterprise is leading the delegation of 18 companies to exhibit at Oil & Gas Asia (OGA) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

During the event companies will be able to learn more about the growing opportunities for the sector in the region, in areas such as subsea engineering, asset integrity and sensor systems.

Following the exhibition event, seven of the companies will then take part in Scottish Enterprise’s first ever delegation of companies to Indonesia, where they will explore emerging opportunities. This will include a joint seminar with the Indonesian Government to highlight how Scottish expertise can support the development of the country’s oil & gas sector, as it moves into deeper and more challenging offshore environments.

Scottish companies have become increasingly active in Asia Pacific region, particularly in Singapore, which was identified as the second biggest global market for international sales (behind only the USA) in the recently published annual survey of international activity of the Scottish oil and gas supply chain. The survey also identified Asia Pacific as one of the most reported regions in terms of immediate growth opportunities.

David Rennie, international sector head for oil & gas at Scottish Enterprise said:

“We know from the work we’ve been doing in the region that Asia Pacific represents huge opportunities for our oil & gas companies – which was backed up by the findings of the recent annual survey of international activity of the Scottish oil and gas

supply chain.

“Scotland has world leading capabilities across right across the sector, but our particular strengths in areas such as subsea engineering and asset integrity, means our companies are ideally positioned to support the region in it’s ambitions to grow the oil & gas industry.

“By looking to develop opportunities in new markets such as Indonesia, we’re also ensuring that Scotland remains at the forefront of the industry as it expands in new geographical areas.”
