Big data jobs boost for Glasgow as Cloudwick confirms new European HQ

California-based Cloudwick Technologies has selected Glasgow as the location for its European headquarters and is expected to create 58 new jobs in Glasgow, following the award of £500k of Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) funding from Scottish Enterprise. The news was announced today ahead of a meeting in California between the company and Paul Lewis, managing director of Scottish Development International (SDI)

Cloudwick is one of the leading big data solutions and services companies in North America and operates in the niche Big Data sector, helping companies define and implement their Big Data roadmaps with its innovative approach, Cloudwick OneTM. With the Cyber Security taking a centre stage, Cloudwick is also introducing an innovative Open Source Cybersecurity solution, OSAS, which will be offered to European clients from Glasgow.

The establishment of a European headquarters will allow the company to service the European operations of some of its big-name US clients and seek further opportunities for expansion outside the US.

News of Cloudwick’s investment follows the publication of the EY Scotland Attractiveness Survey last month, which noted that software was the top performing sector for FDI projects into Scotland, up 170% on the previous year.

Commenting ahead of the meeting with Cloudwick, Paul Lewis said: “We are thrilled to welcome Cloudwick to Scotland and it's great to be able to support the company’s ambitious plans for growth and employment here. RSA is one of the key tools we have to encourage both Scottish and foreign companies to expand and grow in Scotland and this is absolutely vital for continued economic growth.

“The recent EY Global Attractiveness Survey highlighted Scotland’s strong performance as the top location for R&D investment in the UK, and securing Cloudwick’s European headquarters is further evidence of Scotland’s international competitiveness in software and the digital economy.“

Harshdeep Singh, director of operations for Cloudwick (EMEA) said: “We are excited to begin our European journey from Scotland, one of the fastest growing Big Data ecosystems in the world. We are a leader in the North American market with a 100% YoY growth and we aim to achieve the same growth levels in the EU by bringing our extensive experience and rich knowledge base from the US. The support from SDI and Scottish Enterprise will help us build and enrich the wider ecosystem and create a much stronger success story from Scotland.”

Economy Secretary Keith Brown said: "Ernst & Young’s recent data showed that 2015 was a record year for securing inward investment for Scotland and I am thrilled that this is continuing with Cloudwick’s announcement. Cloudwick is joining a number of international companies who have chosen to invest and expand in Scotland, attracted by our diverse business base and our highly skilled workforce.

"The Scottish Government is committed to stimulating growth, protecting and creating jobs and continuing to promote Scotland as a great choice for businesses. I welcome Cloudwick’s expansion into Scotland and the exciting employment opportunities they are creating in Glasgow.”

RSA is available to eligible companies operating within assisted areas in Scotland, on projects which will directly create or safeguard jobs. For more information, click here.
