Companies go global to secure success in difficult times

Twelve companies graduate today from Scottish Development International’s International Preparedness Programme; the first of a series of programmes that are being held throughout Scotland for eligible companies.

The International Preparedness Programme (IPP) supports companies to develop their key skills in a range of global business activities. It equips them with the knowledge to drive forward their business and enhance their capability to internationalise. In the current economic downturn the programme helps to provide companies with the confidence and support to look at news ways of working.

The programme is run as a series of workshops delivered to a group of companies over a number of weeks. The workshops cover the theory and practice of a wide variety of international business aspects including market research and identification, finance and pricing issues, trading and contractual terms, distribution channels and method of market entry. Companies also learn about advertising and promotion issues, sales negotiation skills and producing and presenting an international action plan.

Sarah Thomson, Senior Regional Manager, Scottish Development International, said: “As the economic downturn takes hold companies are continually in search of additional revenue streams. A number of businesses are investigating proactively selling their products and services overseas to achieve this alternative source of income. The International Preparedness Programme helps companies to develop the ability to achieve this international success, ensuring they have the knowledge and practical understanding of a range of global business activities and equipping them with the ability to operate effectively in international markets.”

Jim Brannan, Managing Director of Bcerta Ltd, who took part in the programme and graduates today, said: “The programme proved invaluable in exploring both the theory and practicalities of internationalisation. It focused on how to meet current business challenges and capitalise on new opportunities for growth that still exist from an international perspective. It also presented a unique networking opportunity and enabled delegates to share experiences and new ways of thinking.”

Both the International Preparedness Programme and a new advanced version of the programme are available to all eligible companies. The next programmes will be held in Galashiels beginning in late August and in Edinburgh beginning in September with the programmes also being planned in Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow.  A limited number of spaces are still available on these programmes.  For more information or to arrange to participate in any of these programmes please email enquiries@sdi.co.uk with a subject heading of International Preparedness Programme.
