Edinburgh laser firm targets Japan with Scottish Enterprise

Ultrafast laser manufacturer Chromacity today announced that it has signed an agreement with MSH Systems, to supply and distribute its ultrashort pulse lasers in Japan.

Based in Tokyo, MSH Systems provides a wide range of optical components, lasers and spectroscopy equipment for industrial applications and academic institutes across Japan. The collaboration will see MSH Systems promote Chromacity’s range of fixed wavelength femtosecond lasers and affordable picosecond optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) for imaging and sensing applications.

Chromacity’s fixed wavelength systems provide highly efficient and reliable laser sources for the life science imaging community, while the company’s OPO technology enables stand-off detection and FTIR spectroscopy techniques that can be used to identify and quantify chemical signatures within the atmosphere.

Scottish Enterprise (SE) has supported Chromacity since its formation in a number of ways, including via its Scaling Services team to help the company make the transition from a university spin-out in 2013 to a thriving business today. Through its international arm, Scottish Development International (SDI), SE was able to facilitate the company’s Japanese market entry through access to its extensive global network, helping to identify photonics expertise such as the Japan Photonics Council and MSH Systems.

Chromacity’s collaboration with MSH Systems follows the laser manufacturer’s recent supply and distribution announcement with Photonteck in China.

Analysts predict that the ultrafast laser market in the Asia Pacific region is set to increase from $500 million in 2021 to $1.2 billion by 2028.
