Energy Development Centre to open its doors

A state of the art centre that aims to boost research and innovation in Scotland's energy sector is soon to be available on the Aberdeen Science and Energy Park.

The Energy Development Centre provides high-quality workshop and laboratory space for growth companies in all areas of the sector.

The £4.4 million project has been developed by Scottish Enterprise in response to demand within the industry. It houses 12 individual, high-quality business units that are designed for growing companies engaged in research, design or development.

David Littlejohn, director industries and business infrastructure, Scottish Enterprise, said: "We are nearing the completion of the Energy Development Centre and the multi-occupancy development is already attracting considerable interest from potential occupants. It aims to fill a gap in the market by providing short-term, flexible leases to companies working across the oil and gas, renewables and power generation sectors.

"We know that there is great demand for premises like this which can help companies turn their research into actual products and services. Successful research and development projects are crucial in addressing the long-term challenges facing the north-east's energy sector and will play a significant role in maximising the region's resources and expertise.  The centre will also play an important role in the development of Energetica."

The Energy Development Centre provides 12 high quality units comprising office and R & D space ranging in size from 144 m2 to 332 m2.

It is expected that a second phase of accommodation comprising a further 15 units will begin construction in 2010.The Energy Development Centre is located at the gateway to Energetica, Aberdeen City and Shire's unique strategic framework that will act as a global technology corridor stretching from the Bridge of Don to Peterhead.

Energetica is expected to attract £500 million of investment over the next 10 years and generate an additional £750 million a year for the economy. Scottish Enterprise is leading the development of Energetica on behalf of Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Forum.
