Eurobike 2016 – Biggest Scottish presence ever at world’s largest bicycle show

Scotland will be showcased as a key player in the global cycle market this week, as over 20 Scottish businesses take their innovative cycle products to the world’s largest bike show, Eurobike, held in Germany between 31 August and 4 September.

The Scottish pavilion will showcase a range of products from electric bikes, carbon fibre road bikes, power meters, high-end women’s cycle clothing, bike repair station, a suspension set up product and sports drink. For this year, there will be a concerted effort to attract international bike and component manufacturers to Scotland for their testing, research and development and product launches.

Funded and organised by Scottish Development International, the international arm of the Scottish Government’s Enterprise agencies, and hosted in partnership with Mountain Bike Centre of Scotland (MTBCoS) and Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland (DMBinS), the pavilion will promote Scotland as a world class mountain biking destination and a producer of innovative, high quality mountain bike equipment and accessories.

Paul Wheelhouse MSP, Minister for Business, Innovation & Energy, who is impressed with both the products and the support offered to businesses, said:

“The Scottish Government is focused on increasing Scotland’s international impact and it is fantastic to see a niche industry with growing importance like mountain biking excel in Scotland. We have the perfect terrain and conditions for the activity. It is great that entrepreneurs are inspired by the world class mountain biking in Scotland and are going on to utilise the support available to them to develop new products and export them across the world. With global cycle sales topping £31 billion per annum, Scotland can be well prepared to develop its offering in this sector. The support offered to these companies is first class and is undoubtedly helping to expand their business and grow the Scottish economy as a result.”

Eurobike is the world’s largest bicycle trade show with over 46,000 members of the industry congregating for five days of business. Annual sales of bikes are booming with people moving from cars to bikes in congested cities. Over 133 million bikes are sold across the globe each year and with the rise of electric motor powered “E-Bikes” which in itself is forecasted to be worth $24.3 billion by 2025.

Danny Cowe, Business Development Executive of the Mountain Bike Centre of Scotland Innovation centre says:

“With its large range of Downhill, Enduro and trail centre tracks international brands can come to Scotland to test their drive chains, suspension, brakes, wheel sets, frames and other components to the extreme. We also have great facilities such as the Nevis Range, home of the UCI Fort William Downhill World Cup, Glentress Trail Centre the UK’s premier destination with 300,000 visitors per year and also the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. We also link cycle companies to the fantastic expertise across Scotland’s 19 universities to help them develop their innovative products. Our message to international companies is – come to Scotland to test and develop your products as if it works in Scotland, it will work anywhere.”

The Scottish Government is keen to support the growth of the industry and help to attract ambitious international companies to Scotland. If you have an idea or innovation which is for the mountain biking or cycling market, or could be adapted to suit, then come along to the MTBCoS innovation clinics or get in touch at mtb@napier.ac.uk

Scotland has created the world’s first MTB innovation centre, based at Glentress Trail Centre near Peebles. We are interested in meeting with international brands at this year's Eurobike show to highlight the possibilities to test, develop or launch cycling products in Scotland.
