Global firm's Scottish growth

Finance Secretary John Swinney today welcomed the rapid growth of a global technology firm's Scottish operations.

Mr Swinney opened Dialog Semiconductor's new city centre premises in Edinburgh, marking the firm's expansion - supported by a £1.3 million Scottish Enterprise grant - from four employees to more than 30 since it first set up in Scotland in 2007.

The international company is a supplier of energy efficient integrated circuits optimised for personal mobile, lighting and display and automotive applications, employing more than 400 staff around the globe. Since it was established in 2007, the firm's Scottish design centre has grown to be the third biggest in the group, currently employing more than 30 engineers.

At the formal opening of Dialog's new premises, Mr Swinney said:

"Dialog's rapid growth is a resounding endorsement of Scotland's credentials as a great place to do business, and is testament to the quality of the engineers that the company has been able to employ here.

"The Scottish Government is committed to building on this excellent reputation to accelerate economic recovery through the development of strong international trade links - and we are using every tool at our disposal to achieve this.

"Through Scottish Development International, we are working hard to promote Scotland's strengths to overseas investors and helping Scottish businesses to target international markets. And we are firmly committed to supporting enabling technologies - as underlined by the £1.3 million research and development grant Scottish Enterprise awarded to Dialog in 2008 - which has been vital to the firm's continuing growth, success and innovative design work."

Lena Wilson, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise said:

"Dialog Semiconductor is exactly the kind of ambitious company that we want to attract to Scotland, and its success is a real testament to our continued strengths both in attracting inward investors - and supporting their growth plans once they are here.

"I am delighted with the company's recent achievements and my colleagues within Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Development International look forward to continuing to work closely with Dialog as it further develops its presence here."

Dialog Semiconductor plc is headquartered in Stuttgart and has operations in Austria, China, Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, UK, and the USA.

A supplier of energy efficient, highly integrated mixed signal circuits optimised for personal mobile, lighting and display and automotive markets, the firm's global operation had a turnover of approximately £296 million in 2010 and is one of the fastest growing European semiconductor companies.

Dialog was awarded a £1.3 million grant by Scottish Enterprise in 2008. This award was essential in helping Dialog create a strong presence in Scotland in a short timeframe.
