Jobs boost for Livingston as Asystec Establishes International Centre of Excellence

Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) funding from Scottish Enterprise has helped Irish company Asystec successfully secure its first Scottish base in Livingston, where it will establish a centre of excellence for big data services as part of plans to grow revenue to £14m by 2018.

The company has received £150K of RSA funding to support the development of a new facility at the Almondvale Business Park, which will create 20 jobs in the local area.

The company chose to locate in Livingston to be close to key American partner, EMC Corporation, and to gain advantage from the skilled talent pool developing in the East of Scotland around the School of Informatics in Edinburgh.

The big data development and operational management centre, which is anticipated to open in early 2017, will be focussed on storage and backup solutions, data governance and data management.

Commenting on the grant, managing director of Asystec, Les Byrne, said: “This is an important project for us as it focuses on big data and providing one of our key customers with first-class facilities, management and solutions for one of its most valuable assets.

“We’re looking forward to establishing our new base in Livingston, which we believe will provide us with the ideal launch pad to a number of international markets, initially in the UK and then beyond.”

Managing Director of Scottish Development International, Paul Lewis, said: “We are exceptionally proud to welcome Asystec to Scotland. The new centre of excellence will benefit Scotland’s economy and the local area, while also reinforcing Scotland’s leading role as a global centre for big data and technology services.

“This investment by Asystec is further evidence of Scotland’s position as the most attractive location for investment outside London, as illustrated in the recent EY Attractiveness Survey, and we look forward to working with the company as it grows its business from Scotland.”

The project will see the company establish a design, implementation, maintenance and support centre to support its customers’ big data needs. This will include:-

  • Storage and backup solutions for the high-end data storage requirements of large corporations,
  • Data governance tools which control who, when and where people are accessing corporate data; mainly targeting the financial services, pharmaceutical, healthcare and Government sectors.
  • Data management services which design and implement bespoke solutions to store, protect, and manage large volumes of data without compromising business efficiency.
  • Cloud Services division – Asystec have built out an IaaS and PaaS based Cloud Services business unit offering on-premise and off-premise infrastructure services along with a multi-platform PaaS offering which enables our customers to drive digital transformation.

Big data is considered a key technology of the future and is a priority for Government. It has the potential to transform public and private sector organisations, drive research and development, increase productivity and innovation, and enable market-changing products and services.
