Join Scottish Enterprise’s rural leadership programme to help grow your business

The search is on for ambitious rural business managers in Scotland looking to develop their leadership skills and make a greater contribution to the rural economy.

Scottish Enterprise firmly believes a culture of leadership is key to improving Scotland’s economy and has developed the Rural Leadership programme specifically aimed at business managers in the rural community, where challenges like Gross Domestic Product (GDP), wage rates and business productivity is lower compared to other areas of Scotland.

The programme, which has been running since 2006, is delivered through a series of workshops, residential modules and learning journeys to equip participants with the skills, contacts and knowledge to lead more effective organisations and positively influence rural economic issues and agendas in the local, national and international arenas.

Julian Pace, rural director at Scottish Enterprise said: “A successful leader is not just about being confident with high communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to make quick decisions while negotiating effectively.

“They have high aspirations for their organisation, they can identify a sense of purpose and can communicate and sell that aspiration to their entire staff.  They have a sense of urgency and are willing to try new things while inspiring people to operate at their personal full potential.

“If you recognise some of these qualities in yourself and have ambition to grow your own business and add greater value to both the rural and Scottish economy, then this programme is for you.

“The programme will help you understand the importance of economic and social issues and give you a clear understanding of politics and the political decision making process at all levels.  It will help you to think globally and act locally.”

To date over 160 participants have successfully completed the programme, which is already making a difference with more profitable businesses emerging and greater confidence in strategic diversification.

David Leggat MBE, executive chairman of United Auctions, recognises the value of the programme for senior sales managers. He said: “The programme equips tomorrow’s rural leaders with the vital skills, knowledge and contacts to influence.”

The six month programme will commence in October 2010 and include facilitated workshops, access to inspirational speakers, an awareness of the Scottish, UK and European political process, individual coaching sessions, media training, new contacts and networks and a personal action plan for growth.

A series of recruitment evenings will take place on 8 June (Ayr), 15 June (Aberdeen) and 22 June (Edinburgh).  To find out more or to register your interest please contact the Scottish Enterprise helpline on 0845 607 8787.
