Latest Export Scotland Statistics show international exports continue to increase

Scottish Development International welcomes findings from the latest Export Scotland Statistics which reveal that Scotland’s international exports (excluding oil and gas) increased by £460 million to £29.8 billion in 2016.

Neil Francis, interim managing director of Scottish Development International, said: “These figures confirm that international demand for Scottish products and services continues to remain high, particularly outside of Europe.

" It is disappointing to see exports to EU countries fall by 0.8%, however I am particularly pleased to see food and drink exports to EU countries increasing by 3.5%, reflecting the food and drink sector’s importance to our overall exporting efforts.

“We want to see other sectors replicate this export growth by creating products and services to sell globally. It’s clear that more Scottish businesses are embracing international opportunities and we want to encourage them to do even more.

“Which is why we’re doubling our SDI staff numbers in Europe and establishing hubs in countries with the most opportunities for Scottish companies.

“We know our approach is working, as recent independent evaluation found that for every £1 we invest in overseas trade activity, we generate £4.”
