Scottish Enterprise invests £7 million in Scotland’s Chemical Sciences sector

Despite the difficult times, chemical Sciences continue to be one of Scotland’s success stories. That was the message from Jack Perry, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise at the Chemical Sciences Scotland (CSS) inaugural conference last Tuesday, 25 March 2009 at Dunblane Hydro.

Scottish Enterprise (SE) is a key contributor to CSS, and on behalf of the sector, organised a dinner and conference which celebrated success and explored the key issues for driving the sector forward.

The conference, which was attended by over 160 people in the chemical sciences sector, offered delegates the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions on the key themes of investment, innovation, reputation, sustainability, skills and Scottish Enterprise, with each session agreeing their four key points to be taken forward by the industry topic groups.

Delegates also heard from guest speakers including Peter Tasker, Professor of Industrial Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh, Tom Crotty, CEO of INEOS, Olefins and Polymer Europe, the third largest chemicals company in the world, Jim Mather MSP, Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism and Jack Perry.

Jack Perry said “In the last 18 months, SE has invested £7 million in research and development in the chemical sciences sector, leveraging £70 million of private sector funding, creating and safeguarding in excess of 400 skilled jobs.

“The Chemical Sciences sector is a significant contributor to the Scottish economy, with an R&D hub in which the academic and commercial sectors work hand in hand to develop world leading products bringing life changing benefits.

I am delighted that SE has been instrumental in bringing this important sector together to engage more widely and challenge how CSS can continue to make an even greater impact on the Scottish economy.”

Jim Mather MSP added, “I welcome the determination and dedication of the chemical sciences sector in Scotland to come together to share ideas, aspirations and solutions. The conference, with its exciting programme and a wide range of attendees, builds on the strategic plan of the industry and facilitates further discussion and action. It was an opportunity to celebrate success and to explore ways to drive this vibrant industry forward.”

Sandy Dobbie, Chairman of CSS said “This event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Scottish Enterprise. Their contribution has been invaluable and I am grateful for their ongoing support.

“The dinner and conference has been a huge success, which is down to the commitment and support of everyone involved. We are very proud of the contribution chemical sciences makes to the Scottish economy. The conference has helped raise awareness of the sector ensuring it receives the recognition it deserves.”
