Responding to the announcement from SIMEC Atlantis Energy that the company has signed a contract to supply tidal generation equipment and offshore construction services to to Kyuden Mirai Energy for a demonstration project in Japan, Paul Lewis, Managing Director, International Economic Development at Scottish Enterprise, said:

“This is fantastic news and SIMEC Atlantis Energy deserve enormous credit for securing this contract in Japan.  We were pleased to support SIMEC Atlantis Energy entering the Japanese market and I would like to pay tribute to Scottish Development International’s (SDI) excellent field staff in Japan for assisting the company.

“Scottish Enterprise and its public sector partners, including Highlands and Islands Enterprise, have worked closely with SIMEC Atlantis Energy over a number of years, in particular on the MeyGen project in the Pentland Firth where we have provided significant levels of investment.  This is currently the world’s largest tidal stream array and strengthens Scotland’s place as a world leader in the development, deployment and commercialisation of tidal energy.

“SIMEC Atlantis Energy’s contract is the first international tidal export from Scotland to Japan and demonstrates the global potential of this sector.  Scottish Enterprise will continue to support and champion tidal energy, which will play a key role in our efforts to tackle the Climate Emergency and assist Scotland’s transition to a net zero future.”
