SSCN appoints chief executive officer to promote and enhance Scotland’s world-leading position in stem cell research

The Scottish Stem Cell Network (SSCN) has appointed its first ever Chief Executive Officer to further promote and support Scotland’s world-leading work in stem cell research.

Mr Kevin Price is now in post with a remit to strengthen the SSCN’s overall role in the field of regenerative medicine.

Mr Price has over 25 years experience in the pharma/biotech sector having held senior positions in a number of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and chemical companies. He is currently Principal of Gilvin Associates, based in North Yorkshire.

He will take responsibility for developing the long-term strategy for the business, its implementation and forging new links with academia and industry.

A major task will be to attract additional sponsorship and external funding. This will ensure the sustainability of the SSCN and enhance its ability to drive forward a strategic vision for the development of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine in Scotland.

A key element will be to improve the rate at which stem cell research translates into therapeutic benefits for patients with degenerative diseases.

With new European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) secured - match funded by Scottish Enterprise - covering the next two years, SSCN believes the new management set-up will build on its successes to date.

Mr Price said: “I am delighted to become the SSCN’s Chief Executive Officer and I am looking forward to tackling the key issues outlined by its Board.

“The SSCN has made excellent progress since its launch in 2003, with support from Scottish Enterprise, but we are entering a new and exciting phase with fresh challenges to keep Scotland at the forefront of stem cell research and to help patients with degenerative diseases.

“At SSCN, I am fortunate to inherit a highly effective management team, a supportive main board and an outstanding advisory board. My role will be to build on these firm foundations and to lead the next phase of the network’s development.”

Sir Graeme Catto, Chairman of the SSCN, said: “Kevin Price will be an invaluable addition. He has experience, he is motivated and extremely capable of helping the SSCN reach its goals of self-sustainability while enhancing our reputation and role not only in Scotland but worldwide.”

Rhona Allison, Senior Director Life Sciences at SE, said: "As a fundamental part of SE's portfolio of stem cell initiatives, the SSCN is well placed to co-ordinate and catalyse Scottish activities in this area.

“I am delighted at Kevin Price's appointment which will help ensure SSCN has a successful future in assisting the growth of the stem cell community in

Scotland and its impact internationally."
