Success for Scotland at ADIPEC, Abu Dhabi, November 2013
Six companies have signed deals potentially worth millions to the Scottish economy over the next 10 years as Scotland’s largest ever delegation visited ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi last week.
Scottish water and air specialists, Scotmas Ltd, finalised their award of a £300,000 contract for the delivery of a water disinfection system for the Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC), expected to treat up to a quarter of Qatar’s drinking water. The treatment plant will be designed and built at the company’s Kelso facility in the Scottish Borders and will be delivered direct to Doha in early 2014 for installation at the QEWC desalination facility at Ras Abu Fontas. The company also formed an Egyptian Joint venture company with PIC – Petroleum Industrial Company, focused on delivering the company’s unique chlorine dioxide water disinfection technology into the rapidly developing Oil and Gas Sector in North Africa.
Scotmas Managing Director, Alistair Cameron, commented: “Water resource management is a key issue for all states in the Middle East, and Scotmas have been at the forefront of developing new technologies to meet the unique requirements of the Gulf market.
“We have been delighted to receive the support of Scottish Development International in opening up new opportunities for us, and we are particularly pleased to be able to play a small part in supplying top quality drinking water to the many thousands of Scottish fans we expect to visit Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.”
A further four companies – Doosan Babcock, FoundOcean, Aberdeen-based Peak Consultancy and Dundee-based Safehouse Habitats (Scotland) Ltd - also signed important agreements with Middle Eastern partners during their time at ADIPEC, a critical step in delivering business in the region. Glasgow-based MJB International also announced during ADIPEC that it has secured a multi-million Euro, six year contract from Air Liquide to provide gas turbine maintenance support services for four GE Frame gas turbines operating in Rozenburg and Pernis in the Netherlands.
Mark Hallan, Senior Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa for Scottish Development International, said:
“Scotland’s oil and gas engineering and contracting companies have evolved into one of the strongest supply chains in the world, benefitting from hundreds of years of expertise. Closer collaboration between Scottish oil and gas companies and partners in the Middle East is already resulting in mutual benefit, with supply chain sales into the Gulf increasing 82% 2011/12 on the previous year, the strongest growth of any global market.
“These new contracts and partnerships cement the companies’ foothold in a key global oil and gas market and establish the basis for continued growth of their Scottish operations.”
Humza Yousaf, Minister for External Affairs and International Development, who led the Scottish delegation to ADIPEC during his six day visit to the Middle East, said:
“These great deals show the huge opportunities which are available for Scotland in the Gulf States, particularly in the oil and gas sector.
“As part of my visit to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, I led the largest ever Scottish trade delegation to ADIPEC. Throughout my visit promoting Scotland as a great place to do business and invest, it was clear that there’s a huge appetite for everything Scottish.
“As we move towards 2014, a year that will see Scotland welcome the world to the Commonwealth Games, host the Ryder Cup and hold a referendum on Scotland’s independence, international interest in us is growing and we are keen to share our experience with our friends around the world.”
“The Doosan Babcock and Emirates Link Technology Joint Venture Company was established after identifying the need for tailored life- cycle support services by key oil and gas and petrochemical assets in Abu Dhabi, and the GCC region,” said Steve Hunt, International Service Director, Doosan Babcock.
“This Joint Venture partners global expertise with local understanding to enable client companies to maximize efficiency and productivity with high levels of quality and safety.”

I'm confident that with Al Mansoori's track record, significant contacts and presence in the region we will see strong growth.

much look forward to a successful relationship."
- Dundee-based Safehouse Habitats (Scotland) Ltd signed a strategic agreement with Al Yaseah Group on 13th December at ADIPEC to provide Safehouse’s Positive Pressure Habitat Solutions to the Oil and Gas sector in Abu Dhabi.
General Manager of Safehouse Habitats Mr Gordon Blackwood said: “We are delighted to have established Safehouse Habitats Middle East LLC here in Abu Dhabi - being part of our long term strategy in the company’s international expansion. We see the Abu Dhabi operation very quickly becoming a regional hub serving the needs of our customers in the wider Middle East region.”
