Top science advisers visit the south of Scotland

Finding out about the key strengths of Dumfries and Galloway’s research base will be high on the agenda of a leading group of scientists, engineers and business people when they visit the region today (10th September).

The Scottish Science Advisory Council, co-chaired by Professor Anne Glover, the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, will meet local representatives from further and higher education at a networking event at the Crichton University Campus.  The first meeting of its kind to be held in the South of Scotland, the event will provide an opportunity for Council members to learn about local science and technology developments, and the importance of research to the local economy.

David Gass, Regional Director, Scottish Enterprise said: “The networking event is a great opportunity for delegates to share their views on science and innovation and learn about what is happening in the South of Scotland. Our innovation journey today is more likely to produce rewarding results if it’s based on an open, collaborative approach. Businesses, universities and research agencies are increasingly sharpening their cutting edge by sharing resources, knowledge and expertise – and by spreading the costs and risks to develop new opportunities.”

Scottish Enterprise is committed to working with Scotland’s outstanding science and research sector to deliver more for our economy, and continues to work with partners to identify and facilitate opportunities with the best chance of commercial success.”

Professor Anne Glover, said: "Scotland's science and engineering base is internationally renowned.  Groundbreaking developments are taking place all across Scotland with the potential to improve our health and environment, as well as boosting our economy.  We need to ensure that potential is exploited, wherever research and innovation takes place, and good links with business and industry are vital."
